Chapter 3
When I wake, I'm on the floor. The carpet feels rough beneath my fingertips. I reach out to find something that I can use to help me to my feet. A certain hoodie flops onto my rug. I scuttle away on my hands, perplexed. What on Earth...?
"Jam..." I mutter.
Pulling on clean clothes and brushing my teeth for a lot less than two minutes, I attempt to rushout the door.
"Where are you going, young lady?" Mum screeches from the kitchen. I scuttle in like a little lost rabbit.
"I need fresh air?" I bluff. I just want to get out - find Jam...
"Really? OK, then. Don't go far."
"I won't." I say. "Not unless I have to..." I mutter under my breath.
"What?"
"I said, 'I'll be back at two...'"
"No, girl! That's a five-hour walk!"
"I mean, um... I'll be back at noon, then."
Without another word, I scoop up my keys and skip outside. I halt when I reach my gate. Dave's there.
Whatdoes he want?
"Hi..." He says uncertainly.
I say nothing.
"So?"
"Look," I say "Why are you here?"
"To say sorry"
"Well?"
"Well what?"
"Say sorry and go!" I shout. There's no time for this. I need to find Jam, the only person who understands me in this world.
"Well, actually, I was hoping to go on a date today." He smiles a cocky smile.
"'Well,'" I imitate his 'well', "I can't. Go. Leave me alone. Vamoosh. Begone, foul creature. Get off my gate." I push past him onto the pavement. That's when I notice The Girls. The Girls are Vamisha and Rachael Rae. They're the best-friendy girls that pretend they're twins. They'll go everywhere together, choosing the same clothes, liking the same boys. They obviously don't mind sharing Dave. I don't care; they're welcome to him.
"Dan, wait!" He gasps, pulling me back by grabbing my jacket. I yelp in surprise as he pulls me down into the road by accident.
A midnight-blue Jaguar rushes past, inches from my lying-down body.
"You stupid kids!" The driver curses, driving away. Dave gives him the finger behind his back.
I rub my sore head where I hit the gravelly road. Sitting up, I glare at Dave, and even The Girls have shocked expressions on their faces.
"Thanks for that, Dave. Now I know how much you want to go out with me."
"You'll go?"
"No."
I stalk off, ripping leaves of bushes as I pass, grumbling under my breath.
"Dani...." Dave whines, like it's physically impossible to live without me. It's disgusting. I bet he only needs something from me, then when he gets it, he'll go and I won't hear from him for six months.
"WHAT?!" I yell, not stopping.
"Let's go to the park. Please, Dani?"
I turn floppidly on one heel, throwing the remains of the leaves down. They flutter delicately when a car whooshes past.
"Fine, but-"
"Yahoo!" Dave jumps in joy. "Dani and Dave, it's like we were made for eachother!"
Yeah, right....
"But- you'd better get me a hot chocolate when we're up there. I can't feel my fingers..."
"Of course! I'll do anything! I love you,Dani!"
"Mhm... Sure you do. Let's getgoing."
Dave makes a 'go away' motion with hishands towards the Girls. They give him dagger-eyes and saunter off.
Wewalk for five minutes before Dave attempts to hold my hand. I pull away at his touch.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because."
"Because what?"
"BECAUSE!"
"Because what?" This goes on for several more minutes.
By the time we reach the park,I am already exhausted.
