How To Be a Warrior
This is a really baaaad idea!" I objected. Redd laughed.
"What? No it isn't!!"
"Yes. It. Is."
"No it isn't!" De-De argued.
"Who's side are you on?" I growled.
"Redd's!" Angie answered, with a dreamy grin on her face.
"Since when are you allowed an apprentice?!" I asked. "Why couldn't you have chosen somebody else?"
"Because The Elder told me to. Also, you're marks are special. Didn't you see? You we're Accepted and your marks were black! You are the Chosen One!"
"So? I'm not following." I said.
" What's not to follow? I'm training you - end of story,"
"Look Redd I don't like you , and I never have or will," As I finished saying this a sad expression crossed his face so he turned away. It was replaced with an angry look and he stared me in the eye.
"It's me, or the Night Sisters, chose now."
My answer was quick and simple.
"Night Sisters. You're being a brat."
He snarled at me, and I was instantly scared.
"What?! Who's the bigger brat? Me, warrior of LightClan, or you, a girl who spends her life putting on make-up and staring into mirrors."
My mouth opened and closed, trying to find something to say, but the unfairness of it all had silenced me. I jumped down and ran off in to the bushes. I was met by the Night Sisters.
"Sister." De-De raised her eyebrows.
"That was a baaaaaad idea!" Angie smiled, copying what I'd said eariler.
"But we're glad to have you here."
"S.C.R.A.T.C.H.E.D. are short of members."
"Only the two of us." De-De admitted.
"So! On with swimming!" Angie announced - she obviously had a habit of shouting out what she was going to do.
"Easy Peasy! I got my 200 metres badge when I was 5!" I boasted.
"You can swim?" De-De shouted in disbeleif.
"Prove it!" Angie challenged smugly. I leaped into the nearby pond but I found I cloudn't actually swim as a cat! My fur was water logged so I couldn't stop sinking.
"Knew it!" De-De cried before diving in to help me. The way she swam was weird, but it appeared to be working - front paws, back paws, surge forward, front paws, back paws, surge forward. It was like she was trying to run in the water!
" Blubupbbutbb jdnj jrnbpfr" I spluttered, then when we reached the bank, Icoughed and water splurged out of my mouth.
"Just copy my swimming technique and you'll be fine!" De-De instructed. After another 30 laps, I could swim quite well, but I always kept one paw directed towards the botom in case I sunk again.
"Phase one complete!" Screeched Angie.
" Catching next!" De-De walked to a clearing and drew a circle with her paw. She then sat on the edge with her tail flicking back and forth in the circle. "Catch my tail. If you can!" She added. De-De swished her tail slowly.
"This is going to be easy!" I sprang into the circle, aiming for the tail, but at the last second it rose up into the air. I jumped, it went to the right, I leaped, it went to the left. It went on and on like this until, finally, I clamped my teeth over the ginger fur.
"OWWWW!" Yelped De-De, pulling away. She shook her head at me and then shot off over the fallen tree.
"What did you do you BEAST!" Angie followed but she looked as if she was hiding something.
"Hey! Wait up! I'm sorry!" I called, trying to chase them, but they were too fast.
Eventually, I lost sight of them.
"De-De? Angie? Where are you?"
"Boooooo!"
"Rahhhhhhh!"
"Grrrrrrr"!
I screamed. Redd, Angie and De-De all burst out laughing.
"THAT'S NOT FAIR!" I accused. I ran back in the opposite direction.
"You should go after her." Angie told Redd.
"Makeeda's upset now..." De-De stared. "It was your idea, anyway!"
"But we did complete Phases Two and Three - that's a start." Angie added optimistically.
"Fine. I'm going." Redd padded off after me. I decided to give him a taste of his own medicine. He wandered around the clearing, calling my name. I waited until his back was to me, and then I attacked. Redd's eyes grew wide as I leaped onto his back, I batted him between the ears and he swooped round and I fell to the floor. Another slash and I saw a red line appear in my white fur. Using my back legs, I kicked him in the chest, making him fall onto his back, panting and winded. I put my paws on his shoulders so I'd pinned him down. I stood up but I felt a tingling sensation on my back. I knew instantly that Starr had marked me again, all down my back. I felt a second tickle on my stomach. A stared at Redd, the scratches I put on his shoulder glowed. I looked at my own scratch. It too was luminous. Suddenly we were both human.
"Kat?!" He gasped.
"Yes. I'm so sorry. I thought you were going to do that really cool move you did to the Twins. I reacted instinctively. I'm so sorry!"
"That was awesome! I have never met someone who can do that! Beat me! Oh no, the Twins will never let me hear the end of this!"
"I won't tell." I said quickly.
"Good."
There was an awquard silence. I decided to thank him. But for some reason, the words wouldn't come. Instead, I kissed him lightly on the cheek. He dodged it and, embarrassed, I turned away, towards the school.
"Ready to get back before the end of break." I muttered, looking back at Jack. His cheeks were red.
"School." He corrected me. "And, tomorrow, I won't be in school at all. The Elder has a mission for me. I'll be back on Wednesday..."
"What?" I exclaimed.
"I'm leaving." He said bluntly.
"But... I better get this over with..... I love you but I know you hate me so I'll just go and leave you be" I gabbled, and ran away as fast as I could. But I didn't get very far. A fluffy red-brown cat tripped me up.
"Ow! Jack! What'd you do that for?" Jack changed back to human and answered.
"For this." He kissed me back - on the lips. "By this time tomorrow, I might be dead. Better get the truth out there." He returned to his cat form. I crouched down and hugged him.
"You won't die. You're my Warrior..."
